Periodontology

What is periodontology?

Periodontology is an area of dentistry that studies supporting structures of teeth, as well as diseases and conditions that affect them. It specializes in preventing, diagnosing, and treating gum disease, as well as the placement of dental implants.

Periodontal literally means “around the tooth”. The supporting tissues around the tooth include:

  1. The gums, also called gingiva
  2. The bone that holds the teeth in place

A professional who practices this specialty of dentistry is known as a periodontist. A periodontist is a general dentist who continued their education with 3 additional years of specialized training.

Our goal, as dental care professionals, is to control any infection that may be present, to stop the progression of disease, and to reverse as much of the damaging effects of gum disease as possible.
